How to Sew Cushions for Outdoor Furniture

Refreshing your outdoor space with new cushions is an excellent way to enhance both style and comfort. With a bit of planning and preparation, you can easily create custom cushions that perfectly match your furniture and décor.

1. Choose the Right Materials

Selection of appropriate materials is crucial for outdoor cushions. Exterior fabrics like Sunbrella or canvas effectively withstand water and fading caused by sun exposure. Foam inserts should possess adequate density for support, while zippers facilitate easy removal for cleaning.

2. Measure and Cut the Fabric

To determine fabric requirements, measure the length, width, and height of the cushion. Add an extra 2-3 inches of fabric on each side for seams and folding. Cut the fabric according to these measurements.

3. Sew the Cushion Cover

Place the fabric pieces right sides together and pin along the edges. Use a sewing machine to stitch around the perimeter, leaving a small opening for turning. Trim the corners and turn the cover right side out.

4. Insert the Foam

Cut the foam to fit snugly inside the cover. Insert the foam and adjust it to fill all the corners. Pin the opening closed and hand-sew it.

5. Add Piping or Trim

For a more polished look, add piping or trim around the edges of the cushion. This will conceal any raw edges and create a more professional finish.

6. Finishing Touches

Sew in the zipper and add any other decorative details, such as buttons or tassels. Once everything is in place, give the cushion a good fluff to ensure even distribution of the foam.
