How To Replace Patio Furniture Fabric
Replacing the fabric on your patio furniture is a great way to give it a new look and extend its lifespan. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.
Materials You'll Need:
- New fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Staple gun
- Screwdriver
- Upholstery needle
- Upholstery thread
- Teflon tape
Instructions:
- Remove the old fabric. Start by removing any cushions or pillows from the furniture. Then, use a screwdriver to remove the screws or staples that are holding the old fabric in place. Be careful not to damage the furniture.
- Measure and cut the new fabric. Measure the length and width of the furniture, and add a few inches to each side for overlap. Cut the new fabric to the desired size.
- Wrap the new fabric around the furniture. Start by wrapping the fabric around one side of the furniture, and secure it with a few staples. Then, work your way around the furniture, pulling the fabric taut and stapling it in place. Be sure to overlap the fabric by a few inches at the corners to prevent fraying.
- Sew the fabric together. Once the fabric is stapled in place, use an upholstery needle and thread to sew the seams together. This will help to keep the fabric from coming loose.
- Wrap the fabric around the cushions. If your furniture has cushions, wrap the new fabric around them and secure it with staples or Velcro. Be sure to leave a few inches of overlap to prevent fraying.
- Reattach the cushions. Once the fabric is wrapped around the cushions, reattach them to the furniture. Be sure to tighten the screws or staples so that the cushions are secure.
Tips:
- Use a heavy-duty fabric that is resistant to fading and mildew.
- If you are not sure how to sew, you can take the fabric to an upholstery shop and have them do it for you.
- Be sure to clean the furniture before you apply the new fabric.
- If you are replacing the fabric on a large piece of furniture, it may be helpful to have a friend or family member help you.
