How to Remove Teak Oil from Furniture
Teak oil is a popular choice for protecting and beautifying outdoor furniture. However, it can be difficult to remove if you want to refinish the furniture or change the color.
Materials You'll Need
- Mineral spirits
- Denatured alcohol
- Soft cloths
- Steel wool (optional)
- Wax remover (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Test the Finish
Always test the finish on an inconspicuous area of the furniture to make sure the cleaning solution doesn't damage it.
2. Remove Loose Teak Oil
Use a soft cloth to wipe away any loose teak oil from the surface.
3. Apply Mineral Spirits
Apply mineral spirits to a soft cloth and rub it over the teak oil. Work in small sections at a time, and use a clean cloth for each section.
4. Remove Excess Mineral Spirits
Use a clean soft cloth to wipe away the excess mineral spirits.
5. Apply Denatured Alcohol (Optional)
If mineral spirits alone doesn't remove all of the teak oil, apply denatured alcohol to a soft cloth and rub it over the surface. Again, work in small sections and use a clean cloth for each section.
6. Remove Excess Denatured Alcohol
Use a clean soft cloth to wipe away the excess denatured alcohol.
7. Use Steel Wool (Optional)
If the teak oil is still not completely removed, use fine-grade steel wool to lightly scrub the surface. Be careful not to scratch the furniture.
8. Remove Wax (Optional)
If the furniture has been waxed, you may need to use a wax remover to remove the wax before applying teak oil.
9. Allow the Furniture to Dry
Allow the furniture to dry completely before applying a new finish.
Additional Tips
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Wear gloves to protect your skin.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners that could damage the furniture.
- If you're not sure how to remove teak oil from your furniture, consult a professional.
