How to Recover Patio Furniture Cushions

Patio furniture cushions endure harsh weather conditions, frequent use, and general wear and tear over time. If your cushions are looking worse for wear, don't despair! Recovering them is a cost-effective way to refresh their appearance and extend their life. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you recover your patio furniture cushions:

Materials Needed:

* New outdoor fabric * Scissors * Measuring tape * Seam ripper * Needle and thread or a sewing machine * Zipper (if desired) * Zippers foot (if using a sewing machine)

Instructions:

1. Preparation: * Remove the old cushions from the furniture and discard the filling. * Use a seam ripper to carefully remove the seams of the old covers. 2. Measuring and Cutting the Fabric: * Lay the old covers flat and use them as templates to measure and cut the new fabric. * Add an additional 1-2 inches of fabric around all sides for seams. * Cut two pieces of fabric for each cushion. 3. Sewing the Covers: * Pin the two pieces of fabric together, right sides facing. Use a seam allowance of 1 inch. * Sew around the edges of the fabric, leaving a small opening for turning. * Turn the cover right side out and insert the cushion filling. * Hand-stitch or machine-stitch the opening closed. 4. Adding a Zipper (Optional): * If desired, you can add a zipper to the cushions for easy removal and cleaning. * Measure and cut a piece of zipper to the desired length. * Pin the zipper to the open edge of the cover and sew it in place using a zipper foot. 5. Finishing Touches: * Check the corners to ensure they are neatly sewn and free of excess fabric. * Iron the covers to remove any wrinkles. * Reinsert the cushions into the furniture and enjoy your refreshed patio furniture! Tips: * Choose a durable outdoor fabric that is resistant to fading, moisture, and mildew. * Consider using a foam insert for added comfort. * For extra protection against the elements, apply a water-repellent spray to the covers. * If you are not comfortable sewing, you can hire a seamstress or upholsterer to recover the cushions for you.
