How to Recover Garden Furniture Cushions

Garden furniture cushions are exposed to the elements and can quickly become faded, stained, or torn. Recovering them is a great way to give them a new lease of life and keep your outdoor space looking its best. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you recover garden furniture cushions.

Step 1: Gather your supplies

You will need the following supplies to recover your garden furniture cushions:

  • New fabric
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Zipper (optional)
  • Zipper foot (optional)
  • Iron and ironing board

Step 2: Measure your cushions

Measure the length and width of your cushions. Add 2 inches to each measurement to allow for seams. You will also need to measure the thickness of your cushions to determine how much fabric you need for the sides.

Step 3: Cut your fabric

Cut two pieces of fabric to the measurements you took in Step 2. If you are using a zipper, cut one piece of fabric 2 inches longer than the other. This will allow for the overlap of the zipper.

Step 4: Sew the sides of the cushion covers

Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together. Sew around the edges of the fabric, leaving a gap of about 4 inches for turning. Turn the cushion cover right side out and press the seams.

Step 5: Insert the zipper (optional)

If you are using a zipper, insert it into the opening you left in Step 4. Sew the zipper in place using a zipper foot.

Step 6: Finish the cushion covers

Fold the raw edges of the opening you left in Step 4 under by 1 inch and press. Topstitch around the edges of the cushion covers to secure the folded edges.

Step 7: Insert the cushions

Insert your cushions into the new covers. Zip up the covers if you are using a zipper.

Tips for recovering garden furniture cushions

  • Use a fabric that is durable and weather-resistant.
  • Pre-wash and dry your fabric before sewing to prevent shrinkage.
  • Use a heavy-duty thread to ensure your seams are strong.
  • Double stitch all seams for extra durability.
  • If your cushions are very thick, you may need to add additional fabric to the sides to ensure a snug fit.
  • If you are not confident in your sewing skills, you can always take your cushions to a professional upholsterer.
