How to Oil Old Wood Furniture

Preserving the beauty of old wood furniture is not an impossible task. Oiling can help to nourish, protect and enhance the natural charm of your cherished pieces. However, it's important to approach this task with care and attention to ensure the best results.

Materials You'll Need

Before you begin, gather the necessary materials: sandpaper (120-, 220- and 400-grit), clean cotton cloths or rags, latex gloves (optional), wood cleaner, wood oil, steel wool, and a soft brush.

Preparation

Start by cleaning the furniture thoroughly with a wood cleaner. Use a soft cloth and apply gentle pressure to remove any dirt or grime. This step is crucial for ensuring that the oil penetrates the wood properly. Once the furniture is clean, lightly sand it with 120-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Afterwards, switch to 220-grit sandpaper followed by 400-grit, finishing with the finest grit to achieve a polished texture.

Oiling

Wear latex gloves if desired. Apply a thin layer of oil to a clean cotton cloth and gently rub it into the wood in the direction of the grain. Use even strokes and avoid over-applying the oil. After allowing the oil to penetrate for a few minutes, use a clean cloth to wipe away any excess. Let the first coat dry for 24 hours.

Second Coat

Once the first coat is completely dry, use steel wool to buff the surface with light, circular motions. This removes any raised wood fibers, creating a smoother finish. Apply a second coat of oil in the same manner as before, and allow it to dry for another 24 hours.

Finishing

After the second coat has dried, use a soft brush to gently remove any remaining dust or debris. Your oiled wood furniture is now protected, revitalized and ready to grace your home for years to come.
