How to Make Your Own Cushions for Outdoor Furniture

Overhauling your outdoor furniture without spending a fortune is possible by making your own cushions. With a few simple materials and a little time, you can create custom cushions that will add comfort and style to your patio or deck. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

1. Measure and Cut the Fabric

Start by measuring the seat and back of your outdoor furniture. Add about 2 inches to each measurement for seam allowances. Cut two pieces of fabric for the seat and two for the back using a sharp pair of scissors or a rotary cutter.

2. Sew the Cushion Covers

Lay one piece of fabric right side up and place the other piece on top, right side down. Pin the edges together, leaving a 5-inch opening on one side for turning. Sew around the edges using a 1/2-inch seam allowance, making sure to backstitch at the corners.

3. Turn and Stuff the Cushions

Turn the cushion covers right side out through the opening you left. Stuff the cushions with outdoor-grade foam or batting until they are firm but not too hard. Hand-stitch the opening closed using a blind stitch.

4. Add Piping (Optional)

For a professional-looking finish, you can add piping to the edges of your cushions. Cut a strip of piping cord to the desired length and insert it into the piping foot of your sewing machine. Sew the piping around the edges of the cushion covers, overlapping the ends by about 1 inch.

5. Attach the Cushions

If your outdoor furniture has built-in ties, simply tie the cushions in place. Otherwise, you can use Velcro or outdoor-grade snaps to attach the cushions to the furniture.

Tips for Choosing Materials:

  • Use outdoor-grade fabrics that are UV and water-resistant.
  • Choose fabrics that complement the style of your furniture and outdoor décor.
  • Consider the amount of use the cushions will receive and select fabrics that are durable and easy to clean.

Tips for Stuffing Cushions:

  • Use high-density outdoor-grade foam or batting for better support and durability.
  • Stuff the cushions firmly but not too tightly, as this can cause them to become uncomfortable.
  • Fluff the cushions regularly to maintain their shape and support.
By following these steps, you can easily create your own custom cushions for your outdoor furniture. With a little creativity and effort, you can transform your backyard into a comfortable and stylish outdoor oasis.
