How to Make New Covers For Outdoor Furniture
Whether you're looking to protect your outdoor furniture from the elements or simply give it a fresh new look, making new covers is a great way to achieve both goals. With a few simple materials and a bit of time, you can create custom covers that will keep your furniture looking its best for years to come.
Materials you'll need:
- Heavy-duty fabric, such as canvas, Sunbrella, or marine-grade vinyl
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Drawstring or cord
- Toggles or grommets
Step 1: Measure your furniture
The first step is to measure your furniture to determine how much fabric you'll need. Measure the length, width, and height of each piece of furniture, and then add a few inches to each measurement for overlap and seam allowance.
Step 2: Cut the fabric
Once you have your measurements, you can cut the fabric. Cut two pieces of fabric for each piece of furniture, one for the top and one for the bottom. The top piece should be slightly larger than the bottom piece, to allow for overlap.
Step 3: Sew the pieces together
With the right sides of the fabric together, sew the top and bottom pieces together around the edges. Leave a small opening on one side for turning.
Step 4: Turn the cover right side out
Once the cover is sewn, turn it right side out through the opening you left. Press the seams to give the cover a finished look.
Step 5: Insert the drawstring or cord
To secure the cover to your furniture, insert a drawstring or cord through the hem around the bottom edge. You can also add toggles or grommets to make it easier to tighten the cord.
Step 6: Put the cover on your furniture
Place the cover over your furniture and tighten the drawstring or cord to secure it. Make sure the cover is snug but not too tight, as this could damage the fabric.
Tips for making outdoor furniture covers:
- Use a heavy-duty fabric that is designed to withstand the elements.
- Make sure the cover is large enough to cover the furniture completely, including any cushions or pillows.
- Sew the seams securely to prevent the cover from tearing.
- Add a drawstring or cord to secure the cover to the furniture.
- Store the cover in a dry place when not in use.
