How To Make A Flagstone And Pea Gravel Patio

A flagstone and pea gravel patio is a beautiful and durable addition to any home. It is relatively easy to install and can be customized to fit any space. Here are the steps on how to make a flagstone and pea gravel patio:

Materials

  • Flagstones
  • Pea gravel
  • Sand
  • Edging material (optional)
  • Landscape fabric
  • Tamper
  • Level
  • String line
  • Measuring tape
  • Shovel
  • Rake
  • Broom

Instructions

1. Prepare the area. Clear the area where you want to install the patio of any grass, weeds, or debris. Level the area using a tamper or a shovel. Add a layer of landscape fabric over the leveled area to help prevent weeds from growing through the patio.

2. Install the edging material (optional). If you want to keep the patio in place, you can install edging material around the perimeter. Edging material can be made of concrete, metal, or plastic.

3. Lay the flagstones. Start by laying the flagstones in the center of the area. Work your way out from the center, filling in the space with the remaining flagstones. Use a level to make sure that the flagstones are level. Tap the flagstones into place with a rubber mallet or a tamper.

4. Fill in the joints with pea gravel. Once the flagstones are in place, fill in the joints with pea gravel. Use a broom to spread the pea gravel evenly. Tamp the pea gravel into place.

5. Add a layer of sand. Spread a layer of sand over the pea gravel. The sand will help to keep the pea gravel in place and prevent weeds from growing.

6. Tamp the patio. Use a tamper to tamp down the sand and pea gravel. This will help to compact the patio and make it more durable.

7. Enjoy your new patio! Your flagstone and pea gravel patio is now complete. Enjoy your new outdoor space!

Tips

  • Use a variety of flagstone sizes and shapes to create a more interesting look.
  • Set the flagstones in a bed of sand to help prevent them from shifting.
  • Tamp the pea gravel into place regularly to keep it from settling.
  • Sweep the patio regularly to remove any dirt or debris.
