How to Level Natural Stone Patio

A natural stone patio is a beautiful and durable addition to any home. However, over time, the stones can settle and become uneven, creating a tripping hazard and detracting from the overall appearance of the patio. Leveling a natural stone patio is a relatively straightforward process that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.

Shovel
Tamper
Level
Mason's line
Sand or pea gravel

Step 1: Prepare the Patio

Start by removing all furniture and other objects from the patio. Sweep away any loose debris and dirt. Inspect the stones for any cracks or damage. If any stones are loose or broken, they will need to be replaced before leveling the patio.

Step 2: Establish a Level Base

To ensure that the patio is level, you need to create a level base. This can be done by using a tamper to compact the soil beneath the stones. Start by tamping the soil around the edges of the patio, then work your way inward. Once the soil is compacted, use a level to check for any uneven areas. If there are any low spots, add more soil and tamp it down.

Step 3: Install the Mason's Line

A mason's line is a string or cord that is used to guide you as you level the stones. Stretch the mason's line across the patio, parallel to one of the edges. The line should be taut and level. Use stakes or nails to secure the line in place.

Step 4: Level the Stones

Starting from one corner of the patio, use a shovel to lift a stone slightly. Place a small amount of sand or pea gravel beneath the stone, then tamp it down until the stone is level with the mason's line. Repeat this process for each stone on the patio.

Step 5: Check and Adjust

Once all of the stones are leveled, use a level to check for any uneven areas. If there are any high spots, use a hammer and chisel to remove some of the stone from the top. If there are any low spots, add more sand or pea gravel beneath the stone and tamp it down.

Step 6: Finish the Patio

Once the patio is level, you can finish it by sweeping away any excess sand or pea gravel. If desired, you can also seal the stones to protect them from the elements.
