Consider the desired patio height and account for the thickness of the base materials (gravel and sand) plus the bricks themselves. This will determine how much excavation is required.

Excavation and Soil Removal: Once the area is marked, excavation begins. Using a shovel or sod cutter, remove the existing sod and topsoil within the marked perimeter. The depth of excavation depends on the combined thickness of the base materials and bricks. A general guideline is to excavate 6-8 inches deep to accommodate a 4-inch gravel base, a 1-inch sand layer, and the brick thickness.

Compacting the Subgrade: After excavating, the exposed soil (subgrade) must be compacted to create a stable foundation.
