How to Lay Flagstone On Existing Concrete Patio
Adding a flagstone patio to your existing concrete surface can elevate the aesthetics of your outdoor space. Follow these steps to achieve a professional-looking flagstone patio.
Step 1: Preparation
- Ensure the concrete is dry and clean.
- Use a pressure washer to remove dirt and debris.
- Mark the perimeter of the flagstone area.
Add an expansion joint around the perimeter to allow for movement.
Step 2: Base Materials
Spread a layer of crushed stone, approximately 3-4 inches deep, over the prepared concrete. Compact the crushed stone using a tamper or plate compactor. This layer allows for drainage and stability.
- Lay down a layer of mortar mix or thinset mortar, ensuring a thickness of about 1 inch.
- Smooth the mortar to achieve an even surface.
Step 3: Laying the Flagstones
Start laying flagstones from an edge or corner, setting them into the mortar mix.
- Tap the flagstones into place with a rubber mallet, ensuring they are level and at the desired height.
- Maintain joints of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch between the flagstones.
- Use a spirit level to check the level of each flagstone.
Step 4: Cutting and Fitting
For areas where full-size flagstones do not fit, cut them to size using a wet saw or diamond blade.
- Dry-fit the cut flagstones before applying mortar.
- Fill the gaps with cut flagstones or mortar as needed.
Step 5: Joint Filler
Fill the joints between the flagstones with a suitable joint filler, such as polymeric sand or mortar mix.
- Sweep the joint filler into the gaps, ensuring it fills them completely.
- Use a broom or brush to remove excess joint filler.
Step 6: Sealing
Once the joint filler is dry, apply a sealant to the flagstones to protect them from stains and damage.
- Choose a sealant designed for outdoor use and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Apply the sealant evenly over the surface of the flagstones.
Allow the sealant to cure as per the manufacturer's instructions to ensure proper protection for your new flagstone patio.
