How To Clean Mold On Patio Cushions
Mold can be a common problem for patio cushions, especially if they are left outdoors for long periods of time. It can cause the cushions to look unsightly and can also be harmful to your health. If you notice mold on your patio cushions, it is important to clean it as soon as possible.
Materials You Will Need
- Soft-bristled brush
- Mild detergent
- Water
- Bleach (optional)
- Vinegar (optional)
- Baking soda (optional)
- Microfiber cloths
Instructions
- Remove loose mold spores. Use the soft-bristled brush to gently remove any loose mold spores from the cushions. Be sure to brush in the direction of the fabric grain.
- Create a cleaning solution. In a bucket or bowl, mix together 1 cup of mild detergent with 1 gallon of warm water. If the mold is particularly stubborn, you can add 1/2 cup of bleach to the solution. Alternatively, you can use 1 cup of vinegar instead of bleach.
- Clean the cushions. Dip a microfiber cloth into the cleaning solution and wring it out so that it is damp but not dripping. Wipe down the cushions with the cloth, paying special attention to the areas where the mold is growing. Be sure to rinse the cloth frequently to prevent the mold spores from spreading.
- Rinse the cushions. Once you have cleaned the cushions, rinse them thoroughly with clean water. Use a hose or a bucket of water to rinse away the cleaning solution and any remaining mold spores.
- Dry the cushions. Allow the cushions to air dry completely before using them again. Do not put them in the dryer, as this can damage the fabric.
Additional Tips
- If the mold is particularly stubborn, you can try using a baking soda paste. Mix together equal parts baking soda and water to form a paste. Apply the paste to the moldy areas and let it sit for several hours. Once the paste has dried, vacuum it up.
- To prevent mold from growing on your patio cushions, be sure to store them in a dry place when they are not in use. You can also treat them with a mold-resistant spray.
- If you have any concerns about cleaning mold on your patio cushions, you can always consult with a professional carpet cleaner.
