How to Clean Mildew Off Outdoor Patio Cushions

Outdoor patio cushions can be a great way to add comfort and style to your outdoor space. However, they can also be prone to mildew, which can make them look unsightly and even cause health problems. If you're dealing with mildew on your outdoor patio cushions, don't worry - it's relatively easy to clean. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Mild dish soap
  • Water
  • Soft-bristled brush or sponge
  • White vinegar (optional)
  • Baking soda (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Remove the cushions from the furniture. This will make it easier to clean them and prevent the mildew from spreading to other areas.
  2. Create a cleaning solution. In a bucket or bowl, mix together 1 cup of mild dish soap with 1 gallon of water. If the mildew is severe, you can add 1 cup of white vinegar to the solution.
  3. Apply the cleaning solution to the cushions. Use a soft-bristled brush or sponge to gently scrub the solution into the fabric. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies.
  4. Rinse the cushions thoroughly. Use a garden hose or spray nozzle to rinse the cushions until all of the cleaning solution has been removed.
  5. Apply a baking soda paste (optional). If the mildew is still visible, you can apply a baking soda paste to the affected areas. To make the paste, mix together 1 cup of baking soda with 1/4 cup of water. Apply the paste to the mildew and let it sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the paste away with water.
  6. Dry the cushions thoroughly. Place the cushions in a sunny spot to air dry. You can also use a fan or hair dryer to speed up the drying process.

Tips:

  • Test the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the cushion first to make sure it doesn't damage the fabric.
  • Don't use bleach to clean mildew. Bleach can damage the fabric and make the mildew worse.
  • If the mildew is severe, you may need to repeat the cleaning process several times.
  • To prevent mildew from growing on your outdoor patio cushions, make sure to keep them dry and store them in a dry place when not in use.
