How to Clean Mildew From Outdoor Furniture Cushions

Mildew, a type of mold, can quickly turn your outdoor furniture cushions into an eyesore. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also cause health problems for those who are allergic or sensitive to mold spores. Fortunately, cleaning mildew from outdoor furniture cushions is a relatively simple process.

1. Gather Your Supplies

You will need the following supplies to clean mildew from outdoor furniture cushions:

  • A mild detergent, such as dish soap or laundry detergent
  • A bucket of warm water
  • A soft-bristled brush or sponge
  • A garden hose
  • A tarp or drop cloth
  • Optional: A mildewcide

2. Prepare the Cushions

Before you begin cleaning the cushions, you will need to prepare them. Remove the cushions from the furniture and place them on a tarp or drop cloth in a well-ventilated area. If the cushions are very dirty, you may want to hose them down first to remove any loose dirt or debris.

3. Create a Cleaning Solution

Create your cleaning solution by mixing a few drops of mild detergent into a bucket of warm water. You can also add a mildewcide to the solution if you desire. Follow the directions on the mildewcide label for proper use and dilution.

4. Clean the Cushions

Dip your soft-bristled brush or sponge into the cleaning solution and gently scrub the cushions. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies. If the mildew is particularly stubborn, you may need to let the cleaning solution sit on the cushions for a few minutes before scrubbing.

5. Rinse the Cushions

Once you have scrubbed the cushions, rinse them thoroughly with a garden hose. Be sure to get all of the soap residue off the cushions.

6. Dry the Cushions

Once the cushions are rinsed, allow them to dry completely before putting them back on the furniture. You can air dry the cushions in the sun or put them in the dryer on a low heat setting.

7. Prevent Future Mildew Growth

To prevent future mildew growth, store your outdoor furniture cushions in a dry place when they are not in use. You can also spray the cushions with a mildewcide to help prevent mold spores from growing.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your outdoor furniture cushions looking their best and free of mildew.
