How To Build An Inexpensive Patio Cover
A patio cover is a great way to add some extra living space to your home without having to spend a lot of money. It can provide shade from the sun, protection from the rain, and a place to relax and entertain guests. Building a patio cover yourself is a relatively easy project, and it can be completed in a weekend or two with the right tools and materials.
Materials You'll Need
- 4x4 posts (8 feet long)
- 2x6 rafters (10 feet long)
- 1x6 boards (8 feet long)
- Roofing felt
- Shingles
- Nails
- Screws
- Concrete
Tools You'll Need
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Hammer
- Level
- Measuring tape
- Shovel
- Concrete mixer
Step 1: Dig the Holes for the Posts
The first step is to dig the holes for the posts. The holes should be 2 feet deep and 12 inches wide. Once the holes are dug, fill them with concrete and set the posts in place. Make sure the posts are level and plumb before the concrete sets.
Step 2: Build the Frame
Once the posts are in place, you can start building the frame. Cut the 2x6 rafters to length and attach them to the posts using nails or screws. The rafters should be spaced 16 inches apart. Once the rafters are in place, cut the 1x6 boards to length and attach them to the rafters using nails or screws. The boards should be spaced 12 inches apart.
Step 3: Install the Roofing Felt
Once the frame is complete, you can install the roofing felt. The roofing felt will help protect the roof from the elements. Cut the roofing felt to size and roll it out over the roof. Overlap the edges of the roofing felt by 6 inches and secure it with nails.
Step 4: Install the Shingles
Once the roofing felt is installed, you can install the shingles. The shingles will help protect the roof from the sun and rain. Start at the bottom of the roof and work your way up. Overlap the edges of the shingles by 6 inches and secure them with nails.
Step 5: Enjoy Your New Patio Cover
Once the shingles are installed, your patio cover is complete. You can now enjoy the shade, protection, and extra living space that it provides. Invite your friends and family over for a barbecue or party, or simply relax and enjoy the outdoors.
