How to Build an Outdoor Patio Storage Bench

Outdoor storage benches are a great way to add extra seating and storage space to your patio. They're also relatively easy to build, even for beginners. So if you're looking for a project to tackle this weekend, an outdoor storage bench is a perfect choice.

Materials you'll need:

2x6 pressure-treated lumber for the frame and seat
2x4 pressure-treated lumber for the legs
1x6 pressure-treated lumber for the back
1/2-inch plywood for the seat bottom
Wood screws
Exterior wood glue
Sandpaper
Paint or stain (optional)

Tools you'll need:

Circular saw
Drill
Countersink bit
Sander
Paintbrush or staining pad (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut the 2x6 pressure-treated lumber to the following lengths:

2 pieces at 6 feet for the front and back of the bench
2 pieces at 18 inches for the sides of the bench

2. Cut the 2x4 pressure-treated lumber to the following lengths:

4 pieces at 18 inches for the legs

3. Cut the 1x6 pressure-treated lumber to the following lengths:

4 pieces at 6 feet for the back of the bench

4. Cut the 1/2-inch plywood to the following size:

1 piece at 6 feet x 18 inches for the seat bottom

5. Assemble the frame of the bench by attaching the sides to the front and back pieces with wood screws. Be sure to predrill the holes and countersink the screws so they're flush with the surface of the wood.

6. Attach the legs to the frame of the bench with wood screws. Again, be sure to predrill the holes and countersink the screws.

7. Attach the back of the bench to the frame with wood screws. You can either attach the back pieces flush with the top of the frame or leave a small gap between the pieces.

8. Attach the seat bottom to the frame of the bench with wood screws. Be sure to predrill the holes and countersink the screws.

9. Sand the bench to remove any rough edges or splinters.

10. Paint or stain the bench if desired.
