DIY Cushions for Outdoor Furniture: A Guide to Creating Cozy and Stylish Outdoor Spaces
Creating a comfortable and inviting outdoor living space can be as simple as adding some cushions to your furniture. Not only do cushions provide extra comfort, but they can also add a splash of color and style to your patio or deck. Best of all, making your own cushions is a relatively easy and inexpensive project that can be completed in a few hours.
Choosing the Right Materials
The first step in making your own outdoor cushions is choosing the right materials. The fabric you choose should be weather-resistant and durable enough to withstand the elements. Some popular choices include Sunbrella fabric, canvas, and outdoor upholstery fabric. You will also need to choose a filling material, such as foam, shredded foam, or batting. Foam is a good choice for providing firm support, while shredded foam and batting are softer and more comfortable.
Measuring and Cutting the Fabric
Once you have chosen your materials, you will need to measure and cut the fabric. To do this, you will need to measure the length and width of your furniture cushions. Add 2 inches to each measurement to allow for seams. Once you have the measurements, cut the fabric accordingly.
Sewing the Cushion Covers
The next step is to sew the cushion covers. Start by folding the fabric in half, right sides together. Sew around the edges of the fabric, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning. Once you have sewn the edges, turn the cushion cover right side out and insert the filling material. Hand-stitch the opening closed.
Adding Ties or Zippers
If you want to be able to remove the cushion covers for cleaning, you can add ties or zippers. To add ties, simply cut four pieces of fabric that are 12 inches long and 2 inches wide. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and sew the raw edges together. Attach the ties to the corners of the cushion covers.
To add a zipper, you will need to purchase a zipper that is the same length as the opening on the cushion cover. Sew the zipper to the opening, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Enjoy Your New Cushions
Once you have finished making your cushions, you can enjoy relaxing on your comfortable and stylish outdoor furniture. Your cushions will add a touch of personality to your space and make it more inviting for guests.
